Taken aback by the high cost of gilding cushions, we came up with our own more cost effective version. Each cushion is approximately 6” round (or square), deeply padded and covered with moleskin to provide the proper cushioning for cutting your loose leaf gold.

TIP: We tested out several different gilding knives on the market to the tune of many, many dollars (they average $30-$40 apiece), and ultimately found that none of them worked nearly as well as a simple cake frosting knife with a rounded tip. We can recommend the “Ateco ULTRA #1306” with a 6” blade for a retail price of $8.00-$10.00. It has a semi-sharp edge, and cut the gold beautifully! If you find that the gold is sticking to the blade, simply wipe it down with a piece of silk. For really stubborn sticking, wash the knife thoroughly with soap and water, dry, and then wipe with a cloth moistened in distilled water.
