BRUSHES
Sue uses a very limited number of brushes for her particular style of
detail painting. Most of them are easy to find through local decorative
painting stores or paint supply catalogs. However, folks have told us it
is often difficult to find Yarka and Loew-Cornell Mixtique angle brushes.
We include them here in our Accessory Line for your convenience.
YARKA BRUSHES
These brushes are sized and “stacked” quite differently from the standard
synthetic round brushes you may be using to paint, so that a Yarka #0 is
NOT the same size as any other #0 round brush you are using. The capacity
of these sables to retain moisture is awesome! The moisture retention
capacity of the brushes allow you to paint longer without having to
constantly reload your brush with either paint or water.
The bristles come to a much sharper
point, and have a slightly smaller bulb than the standard round brush.
This makes them wonderful for Susan’s style of detail painting, but not
particularly useful for pulling traditional strokework. On the flip side
of that coin, traditional strokework brushes don’t work particularly well
for this type of detail painting, so if you find yourself frustrated by
ornamentation it may be because you are simply using the wrong tool!

MORE ACCESSORIES
Below are some additional tools and
accessories that we have available for purchase.
AC101-Craft Lathe
The perfect tool for measuring and creating even painted borders,
bands of color and designs on rounded objects such as wooden eggs,
glass Christmas ornaments, multi-sided wooden balls, and a wealth of
other available painting surfaces.
A solid .30 gram
droplet (size of an aspirin) of 23K Italian gold is housed in the
center of a miniature plastic watercolor well. Add a drop or two of
distilled water in the paint dish, and the gold becomes pliable
enough to use as paint.
Taken aback by the high cost of gilding cushions, we came up with our
own more cost effective version. Each cushion is approximately 6”
round (or square), deeply padded and covered with moleskin to provide
the proper cushioning for cutting your loose leaf gold.
Normally you can
only find Instacoll in 3.3 or 16.5 ounce containers costing
substantially more than offered here. That’s great if you’re planning
on using the product extensively, but we know that many of you would
prefer to simply try out this new gilding tool without a major
financial commitment. We have filled film sized plastic canisters
with Instacoll in order for you to have a “test sample”.
The most economical
alternative to buying the gilding supplies we normally offer “a la
carte”. The student gilding kit contains one packet of 23K gold leaf,
one 23K shell gold button, gilding cushion, canister of Instacoll, 2
pipettes, glassine paper, popsicle sticks, one empty film canister,
silk square, and one gilded alphabet “elephant hide” print. These are
most (but not all) of the essential materials you will need to
complete several of the “Gilded Alphabet” patterns.
Faber-Castell's Pitt Artist Pens are created with India Ink in a convenient pen format. This plastic envelope contains 4 pens, each with a different nib width: superfine, fine, medium and a bold, flexible brush tip. The black pigmented drawing ink is waterporoof, smudge proof, acid-free/ph neutral, and provides maximum light-fastness. This turned out to be a superior product when I was doing the Edwardian penwork technique found in our Penwork Tea Box pattern packet.
AC109 - Mechanical Pencil Loaded with UniColor Chalk
The mechanical pencil is ordinary, but the chalk insert sure is not! The perfect tool for sketching on paint surfaces, the flesh toned "lead" won't leave a waxy residue and wipes off easily. This pencil comes with a pack of refills that will keep you sketching for years.
The full ornamental
border for “The Complete Gilded Alphabet” pattern packet is laser
printed on a piece of 8.5” x 8.5”, 100% rag card stock that resembles
the mottled look of parchment while providing enough weight to stand
up to layers of gilding and watercolor washes without a single buckle
or bend. Preprinting the pattern right on the elephant hide surface
eliminates the need for surface preparation as well as tracing and
transferring the pattern line drawing. Just trace on the letter of
your choice from the pattern packet in the center of the design and
you’ll be ready to paint.
The full pattern
for the “Gilded Blessings Angel” pattern packet is laser printed on a
piece of 8.5” x 10.5”, 100% rag card stock that resembles the mottled
look of parchment while providing enough weight to stand up to layers of
gilding and watercolor washes without a single buckle or bend.
Preprinting the pattern right on the paper surface eliminates the need
for surface preparation as well as tracing and transferring the pattern
line drawing!
